During my undergraduate years, I became highly involved in first-year experience programs, developing a deep interest in the first—and second-year student experience. However, my college campus experience revealed a significant gap: students transitioning from high school to college were not receiving the recognition they deserved, nor were they provided a support system for their success. This realization propelled me to pursue a Master’s in college student development, further fueling my determination to create an organization to bridge this gap and set these students up for a successful future.
We initiated the first NSCS chapter at George Washington University, holding our inaugural induction ceremony on April 30th, 1994. Now, three decades later, our impact endures. Today, we celebrate 30 years, 300 chapters, millions in scholarships, and our lifetime commitment to recognizing and preparing our scholars for success. NSCS has been instrumental in recognizing the top 20% of academic achievers and equipping them with practical ways to earn more scholarship money, gain access to better leadership, internships, and job opportunities, and become more well-rounded scholars. This is the impact we are proud of and continue to strive for.
As we commemorate our 30th anniversary, we also want to celebrate you—the catalyst for our three decades of impact. Your steadfast commitment to education and your future has fueled our journey. We will celebrate our 30th birthday all year and have exciting announcements for you. Follow us on LinkedIn to stay up-to-date with these special announcements.
Thank you for 30 years of inspiration, dedication, and shared success. Here’s to 30 more!
Warm regards,
Steve Loflin

]]>“We are very excited to tap into the member base of NSCS to reach underrepresented students who are interested in a career in real estate,” said Michael Huckaby, CEO and Founder of LifeRamp. “We’ve already had 54 NSCS members complete the CORE program and currently have 100 more in our current cohort. Given NSCS’s size and history of supporting underrepresented students, this couldn’t be a more perfect fit.”
Students achieving this credential will be prepared for entry level jobs in the real estate industry primarily as a leasing consultant, marketing representative, property administrator. Students will leave with an overview of the industry that will position them for future studies or entry level positions. The program encourages additional exploration through experiential learning such as job shadowing, internships, part time or full-time employment.
“We are always looking for ways to add more value to our lifetime membership offer,” said Stephen Loflin, Founder of NSCS. “Our focus on helping high achieving college students and recent graduates achieve their career goals has never been more important. Working with LifeRamp and CORE helps us meet one of our goals of helping our members continue to achieve at the highest levels.”

“We are incredibly proud to renew and expand our scholarship program with NSCS,” said LaDonna Bond, GEICO’s Head of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. “At GEICO, we believe strongly in intentional inclusion and are deeply committed to making a lasting impact on the communities where our associates and customers live and serve through cultural, social, and civic engagement. These scholarships are an opportunity for us to support students from diverse backgrounds as they pursue their education.”
“We are very excited about GEICO’s increased commitment to NSCS members through their scholarship program,” said Stephen Loflin, Founder of NSCS. “Last year, NSCS and GEICO were able to support 15 students which was amazing. This year, GEICO has almost doubled their funding and will now be supporting 35 NSCS members from diverse backgrounds. In addition to the financial support, the recognition that comes with being selected as a GEICO scholarship recipient or GEICO Changemaker reinforces the academic and personal success our members have achieved, and we can’t thank GEICO enough for their support.”
In 2020, NSCS launched the Scholar Initiative to combat the rising cost of higher education for students. With a diverse membership, the goal was to increase opportunities for minority and marginalized communities. In 2021, NSCS was pleased to continue the partnership with GEICO to offer diversity-focused scholarships. Through these GEICO-sponsored scholarships, NSCS has been able to make an impact and support NSCS members who are first-generation students, minority students in STEM, HBCU and Latino/a/x students. This past year, NSCS expanded those opportunities to include new awards focused on Women in Business, the AAPI community and LGBTQ+ members. ]]>The achievement of Diamond Star status is highly competitive among the nearly 300 NSCS chapters throughout the country, and the quality of the applications and competitiveness for this coveted honor was tremendous. Similarly, the achievement of Platinum Star status is a great honor and was only bestowed upon ten chapters nationwide this year. These awards are based on a careful review of applications submitted by the chapters to demonstrate a high level of achievement and activity of their members within the honor society.
As the only chapter to receive the Diamond Star status elite national distinction, the chapter at New Mexico State University truly embodied the NSCS pillars of scholarship, leadership, and service. Their application stood out amongst the other chapters for several reasons including their professionalism in the application, their ability to conduct meaningful events such as the Spring Sendoff Meeting, Scholar Study Nights, as well as a wide variety of community service events benefiting their local community including an Out of the Darkness Community Walk, the annual Keep State Great event, multiple times volunteering at El Caldito Soup Kitchen and much more.
“We’re delighted to see that NMSU’s NSCS chapter has been recognized as the Diamond Star Status Chapter for 2021-2022,” said NMSU Chancellor Dan Arvizu. “This is a testament to the outstanding work being done by the chapter members to make a difference in the community through volunteering and service. I’m looking forward to seeing what these student leaders will become in the future.”
“During the time that I have been the advisor [since 2008 for the New Mexico State University chapter of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars], I have had many successful groups of officers,” said Victoria Banuelos, “but none quite as efficient and impactful as this year. I am very proud of each of the graduating officers and members as they were the reason that this chapter was so successful this semester.”
NSCS also announced its platinum chapter winners. They are College of Staten Island, DePaul University, Full Sail University, Grand Canyon University, Jackson State University, Purdue University, The University of Akron, University of Puerto Rico Rio Piedras, University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, and Winthrop University.
“We are very proud of this year’s chapter winners as they continue to overcome tremendous challenges in light of the ongoing pandemic and how it has impacted the life of college students. From attending school on campus, hybrid, or remote to having to recruit and make chapter activities still happen, we respect and appreciate the hard work these chapters put in this past year. These chapters exemplify the best of what It means to be an NSCS scholar,” said NSCS Executive Director Scott Mobley.
All recipients of this honor are NSCS chapters that have continuously displayed strong leadership and provided community service and networking opportunities for their members. They have successfully sustained a significant level of engagement, fundraising, member recruitment and more. Over the past year, these NSCS chapters have embodied the society’s pillars of scholarship, leadership and service through programming and events.
]]>“We know ‘the great resignation’ has had an impact on college campuses over the past 24 months which makes the dedication these advisors have shown to supporting student success so impressive,” said NSCS Executive Director Scott Mobley. “As higher education professionals, they are committed to ensuring students have access to the resources they need as they pursue their college dreams. They are also great role models for members to learn how to give back to society. NSCS is and will forever be grateful to these individuals for both their personal and professional service to our chapters.”
DéJeuné, an NSCS Alumna from Louisiana State University, has led continuous communication and support for the NSCS chapter at the University of New Orleans. Through difficulty establishing regular communications and a solid team structure, DéJeuné has always worked to follow up and make sure everyone is on the same page with the mission of NSCS – to provide college students on campus with opportunities in scholarship, leadership, and service. NSCS staff are looking forward to continuing to work with DéJeuné on establishing the chapter at UNO.

Since Mallory started serving as the Texas Woman’s University advisor, she has been nothing but supportive. She meets periodically with the national office staff to discuss chapter activity and growth efforts. She is quick to communicate and always makes herself available for the leadership team. Mallory also persevered through several denials for student data and continued to push TWU’s records office to provide us with the data so that the chapter could invite new students this spring. She continues to show that she wants the chapter to flourish and the NSCS staff appreciate her dedication.

From the moment the chapter’s executive board approached Dr. Huang to serve as their advisor, she presented them with countless ideas that they have implemented into their chapter. She is consistently looking for ways to help our team flourish and works diligently to ensure that each moving part of our chapter is in its best possible shape. Her positive attitude is infectious and has helped the team to rediscover the enjoyment and creativity in each of their respective roles. Dr. Huang not only brings ideas to the table, but she helps the team to follow through with them. After implementing her advice, the monthly officer meetings run more smoothly and the team functions as a cohesive unit rather than solely as individuals. Dr. Huang also connects the officers with on-campus resources and encourages them to collaborate with organizations throughout Richmond to support the community.

Niki has been an amazing support for the Full Sail University chapter. She dedicates so much time to make sure things are running smoothly, that the chapter officers feel supported and valued in their roles, and that communication is effective between all members of the team. Niki makes an effort to attend and help manage all chapter activities and tirelessly works to make sure the Full Sail chapter is one of the best in the country. She helps the officers to develop their leadership skills and guides them to become effective leaders. The local chapter and national office appreciate her for all the amazing work that she’s done this year and hope she’ll continue to be a part of the NSCS team at Full Sail University.
